A Lansing View on the GOP Debate at Oakland University in Michigan on CNBC

When watching debates, I often times feel that these are not so much debates as they are a reflection of which candidates the moderators and the media machines behind them most favor. This should be easy enough to see, not from the amount of attention they give to each candidate - which has its own implications though it could be chalked up to their idea of which candidates they think the people want to see - the clue of the media's favorites can be asked in the questions that they ask to the candidates.

The questions that the candidates get asked are reminiscent of tabloid headlines. They are full of implications and cannot always be answered simply as "yes" or "no." The quintessential question that demonstrates this is the question, "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" Answering "yes" can imply that the man was beating his wife beforehand but has since stopped. Answering "no" is obviously even worse. The assumptions, implications, and even accusations behind the questions make this less of an honest debate over important issues and more of a political reality TV show.

A perfect example was the question Mitt Romney was asked about whether or not he would keep or fire Herman Cain over the false accusations made. If he answered "no" he would be a jerk. If he answered "yes" he would be affirming his biggest competition in the Primaries. And of course, their have been tons of other examples like this throughout the debate.

Okay, I'm off my soap box. Once I get passed the loaded "gotcha" questions I settle down and actually enjoy watching the debates. They are entertaining, they are informative, they are revealing. Our nation is undergoing some serious crisis right now, and we need leadership, character, and some severe reduction in government spending if we do not want to look like Italy in the not too distant future.

Only 9.4% of Lansing turns out to the polls today... makes you wonder what would have happened if those occupying the park had gone to vote instead. Or maybe they did and that's all there were?

Here's at least one company that is doing well despite the MI economy... too bad they're owned by a company in the UK. But still... It at least shows that Lansing isn't dead!

New Lansing News Site - News By You For You

We are in the process of planning a new, user-based news site just for the 517! We're keeping the domain name and the most of the details under wraps until our launch here in a couple of weeks (DV).

There are several things that make this website different than normal news-based sites such as State Journal and this is your sneak preview of what's coming!

  1. Firstly, as was just mentioned, this site will have a user-generated part of the site that works similar to the site SEOmoz.com (a site for everything SEO). The site will have a normal writer base and will have a part that is open for Lansing-ites to write their own stuff. Periodically, especially good, helpful, or news-worthy content submitted by our users will be "promoted" to an official standing.
  2. Secondly, this isn't going to be a traditional news site that reports only the happenings of the city in a way that's depressing and virtually valueless. The stories and articles on our website will mostly be geared towards things that add value to our community and report on ways that we as a community can influence the city for good even more.
  3. Thirdly, as was just stated, the site won't be all news. We are already arranging for articles on health and fitness, shopping / couponing, and other things that we feel will add value to our city.

And that's about all we can leak at the moment! Stay tuned to these posts for our Twitter, Facebook, and of course, the official launch of this new Lansing site!

And as always, #loveLansing

The Lansing Network

The official announcement of the Lansing Network was done on our company blog. The basic gist of it all is this: There are a lot of amazing things about Lansing and there are some things that are not so great. With the Lansing Network, we want to highlight the things that are great and help improve the parts that aren't. And we plan to do this using the talents we've been given throught the web.

There are some amazingly terrible Lansing-based websites. There are some good ones and some valuable ones. We want to use the web to connect people with people, people with businesses, and motivate and organize people to positive action in the City of Lansing.

To do this, we have planned out a litany of websites by which we can connect with people on various levels - news, community sites, business sites, etc. By working to organize, clarify, and consolidate information on the web in ways that Lansing finds valuable, we hope to gain the public's support in bringing about positive change.

It is our firm belief that Lansing can be a great city with low to zero unemployment, top tier education and learning programs, and world-class innovation that propels us forward into a bright new future. So here we go... we will be rolling out our launch over the rest of the year and, God willing, be in full swing by January, 2012!

Welcome to Love Lansing

Love Lansing is a blog all about Lansing-based stuff. Over the next several months, you'll get information about everything from websites, to gyms, to restaurants, to other businesses, to news, to places where you can connect with other Lansing-ites.
